The town of Stellenbosch, the second oldest European settlement in the Western Province, is situated about 60km east of Cape Town, on the banks of the Eerste River. It consists of about 28 suburbs and has its own municipality, which also looks after Franschoek and Pniel. Tokai originated, as did much of this part of Cape Town, as a farm, and the initial homestead still stands in the suburb - a fine example of Cape Dutch architecture. The Tokai forest, originally planted by Simon van der Stel in 1694, was filled with oak trees. Today it is a pine plantation, which extends up the slopes of the Constantiaberg Mountain range and provides wonderful routes for mountain bikers and is a popular spot for locals and their dogs.
